BREATHE. An Adaptation of Gordon Matta-Clark und Juan Downey’s Fresh Air Cart (1972), 2008
Unfortunately copyright and well known conflicts of interest confounded the possibility to show this pioneerpeace in the exhibition. But we found: “Breathe”, Adaption of Fresh Air Cart, Performance, 2008, Shanghai. Sarah Lewison with Jay Brown for the exhibition Intrude 366 organised by Zendai Museum Shanghai.
An example to follow!
Breathe was an intervention into the everyday life of Qipu Market in Shanghai that enabled passersby to breathe pure medical oxygen while reclining on the padded seat of an retrofitted cargo tricycle. This mobile oxygen unit was an adaptation of “Fresh Air Cart”, a 1972 installation performed on the streets of Lower Manhattan by sculptor Gordon Matta-Clark and video artist Juan Downey. In iterating this earlier project, “Breathe” inquires into the changing context between 1972 in New York City and 2008 in Shanghai.
