About the exhibition
The Deutsche Künstlerbund is glad to announce thesolo exhibition »Blendung« of the artist Nana Petzet . Nana Petzet, who in 2023 received the HAP Grieshaber-Preis der VG Bild-Kunst,enables a unique view into her new artistic reserach on species protection in this exhibition. Her works are characterized by their intensive examination of the interconnections between nature, art and science. As. As an artist, she usesthe methods and practicesof these disciplines and questions themin innovative ways.

In the exhibition “Blendung” Nana Petzet shows “a walk-in publication with an integrated experimental setup” in the rooms of the German Artists’ Association. The installation consists of a cross-room sound work and six intermedia stations that focus on the nocturnal living space. Presented for the first time are the results of a scientific study of the complex effects of artificial light sources on the behavior of nocturnal insects. In close collaboration with the entomologist Timo Zeimet, the artist examined the question of what the loss of night and with it a habitat due to the permanent disruption of human intervention means. As part of the exhibition “Death in Venice” at the Gallery for Landscape Art in Bad Tölz, Nana Petzet transformed the light that was originally installed in a parking lot to protect people into an attracting system for insects.

With the exhibition “Blendung” Nana Petzet offers an inspiring insight into her multi-layered, artistic approach, in which she uses scientific methods as a tool and basic material at the same time.

In October and November, at the invitation of Ute Langanky, the Stiftung Insel Hombroich welcomes artist Hannah Schneider to the Raketenstation Hombroich guest studio.

Hannah Schneider works across genres in various media and materials with a focus on installation, public space, performative action, film, and drawing. Her works are based on an ongoing preoccupation with central sculptural themes, such as body and space, mass and proportion, or movement and statics. They explore the relationship of the body to the surrounding space in objects, installations, and performative film works. Architecture and landscape have a direct influence on the predominantly site-specific installations. Aspects of temporality, evident for example in the evaporation of water or the migration of shadows over the course of a day, are negotiated in their works. Time and space, light and shadow, movement and gravity play an ever-changing role.

Hannah Schneider’s artistic practice is particularly concerned with the physical properties of space as well as the ephemeral processes in nature. During her guest residency at Raketenstation Hombroich, she will create large-format prints of the pond surfaces, which she will make accessible to visitors as part of an open guest studio.

Hope is the opposite of fear!

 

The goal of the event is to express solidarity with women* land defenders from all over the world. We will form a communal body to counter the politics of indifference and despair and regain agency in seemingly hopeless times. The event is an act of internationalist solidarity based on the recognition that protecting the environment is inseparably related to political struggles against (post)colonial domination, structural racism, and misogynistic practices.

 

The event accompanies the exhibition of Ines Doujak Temporary Gallery.

Exhibition of nominees at Schaudepot Kunsthalle Rostock

The Cultural Foundation Rostock e.V. and the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock are awarding the Rostock Art Prize for the 17th time this year. The aim of the prize is to recognize and promote artists who live in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or whose biography and work has a connection to the region. The genre should change every year. For 2023, the art prize will be offered for object art for the first time. The exhibition of works by the nominees provides an overview of their artistic work. The artists chose their work themselves.

The jury nominated four candidates from the pool of 41 applicants, including 2 positions that have been represented at ZNE for many years:

Susanne Gabler and the artist collective SCHAUM.

Foundation for the Fund Aesthetics and Sustainability – FAeS

The proceeds from the sale of works from the exhibition, which were made available by the artists for this purpose, will serve as a symbolic foundation for a first pilot project of the FAeS. Almost half of the exhibited works can be purchased on July 16, 2023 on the evening of the finissage.

Until July 16, 2023, the international traveling exhibition EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW FAeS! can be seen at the Uferhallen in Berlin-Wedding. Since 2010, when the exhibition began in Berlin, it has traveled internationally, been changed, expanded and updated. Currently, it shows 82 of a total of 139 artistic positions on major ecological issues of our time – in the interaction of art, science and invention. For thirteen years, artists from all over the world have contributed to the debate on aesthetics and sustainability with their works in the exhibition, accompanied by impulses from science. This future-oriented and insightful cooperation is to be consolidated through the establishment of a new funding instrument, the FAeSFund Aesthetics and Sustainability (FÄN). It is high time to act.

The interweaving of scientific and artistic research was the motivation for curator Adrienne Goehler to develop the concept of the Aesthetics and Sustainability Fund. The fundamental factor here was the realization that the current funding instruments do not allow for cross-disciplinary research and thus massively limit the innovative impact of the arts. Goehler conceived the exhibition EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW! to provide insight into how liquefaction and interweaving of disciplines enable sensory cognition. In the meantime, 195 protagonists from art and science are calling for such a transdisciplinary funding instrument.

On June 6, as part of the exhibition in Berlin, director and conceptual designer Anne Schneider, lawyer and visual artist Dr. Christine Fuchs, president of the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft Dr. Tobias Knoblich, and scientist and artist Prof. Dr.-Ing. Vera Meyer discussed the necessity and feasibility of a FAeS.

Vera Meyer used her own research work to illustrate how the innovative power of her art was able to unfold when she combined it with her research on fungal metabolic potentials and gained completely new insights into it. She has headed the Chair of Molecular and Applied Microbiology at TU Berlin since 2011. Meanwhile, her inter- and transdisciplinary research projects combine natural and engineering sciences with art, design and architecture and create biobased scenarios for possible living and housing worlds of the future. She emphasized that, due to the complexity of current events, it is above all important to move from an “I” to a “we.” Because no one can understand this world alone anymore, she said, it is important to bring together as many people as possible with different perspectives. Complex theoretical relationships must be made tangible and thus understandable. “The challenges we face can only be penetrated through art,” says Vera Meyer.

Building on her dissertation entitled “Avantgarde und Erweiterter Kunstbegriff – Eine Aktualisierung des Kunst- und Werkbegriffs im Verfassungs- und Urheberecht” (Avant-garde and Extended Concept of Art – An Update of the Concept of Art and Works in Constitutional and Copyright Law), Dr. Christine Fuchs described a very strict to limited interpretation of artistic freedom and purpose in Germany. Due to the historically experienced appropriation and regimentation of the arts, potential effects of art are often interpreted here as a threat to artistic freedom. She pleads for an expansion of artistic freedom in order to be able to take up such impulses and bring them together with other areas, so that art can become reality.

Dr. Tobias Knoblich emphasized that it is the task of cultural policy to create the basis for this potential to unfold by providing resources in addition to existing instruments. Artists, whose work is characterized by horizontal connections between disciplines, should thus be enabled to act accordingly. He emphasized that from a cultural policy perspective there were no conclusive arguments against a FÄN. The immense potential of aesthetics as a moment of sensual cognition must be increasingly focused on, he said. This is where the Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft could come in.

In order to overcome existing barriers of responsibility, voices were raised in favor of so-called linkers who would intensify the exchange between business, science, civil society and art. Ideally, the structure and funding of the Fund for Aesthetics and Sustainability would already reflect the plurality that is to be made possible by it. Ideally, funds for the FÄN should not come from the culture department alone, but proportionately from the environment, culture, science and research departments.

As a first pilot project of the FAeS, prototypes for houses made of renewable raw materials are to be developed – as well as workshops designed to guide self-building in Ukraine and the earthquake regions in Syria and Turkey. In June, new connections between ecological building materials such as sheep’s wool, mushroom mycelium, hemp, clay and bark have already been explored and further developed in workshops between artists and scientists. Unimagined potentials are opening up for a sustainable construction industry – not least in reconstruction in war and disaster areas. The conventional construction industry accounts for 40 percent of the climate disaster; without a transformation of this sector through circular economy and renewable building materials, a sustainable future will not be possible.

These have been overwhelming weeks, what an impressive and impressed audience! Feeling richly blessed, we want to celebrate with you the end of this journey, enjoying its explorations over the past 13 years, with a total of 139 artists from 29 geographical origins trusted us with their works. Our common goal was and is to open up the debate between aesthetics and sustainability and to make it perceptible to the senses.

With the farewell to this one great chapter, we are opening a new one, equally great. The idea for a fund for aesthetics and sustainability emerged already at the very beginning of EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW! – the exhibition and meanwhile 195 protagonists from art and science increase the significance of such a fund and make it more visible.

EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW! goes Fund Aesthetics and Sustainability | ETF! FAeS

Aesthetics is all about expanding perception and knowledge through sensual-bodily experience. The aim is to strengthen the imagination, to support the speculative, to create analogies. The purpose of the FAeS is to create a further space of possibilities for expanding the artistic and scientific radius of action. The fundamental goal is to enable intervening in the great challenge of transformation, to realize corporations and to create time.

Based on the experiences of the exhibition, the intention is to create a pilot project that, with intensive further research into the renewable resources of mushroom, wool, hemp and bark, confronts the conventional climate-killing building sector – through new forms of artistic-scientific
intervention and cooperation.

Almost half of the artworks in the exhibition can be purchased during the finissage.The artists want to lay a symbolic foundation, as it is their work that shows that research in art is essential. The same applies to cooperation with the sciences, inventors, NGOs and the expansion of one‘s own artistic sphere of action through longer-lasting cooperative projects.

We will be pleased to see you becoming part of the new path through the purchase of works or donations. In doing so, you and your name will always be connected to the realization of FAeS.

The exhibition project spans the arc from the historic production site of the Otto textile company to the present and future. Parallel to the IBA’27 Festival, in July 2023, action lectures and collaborative exchange will be added along and across the river.

The Neckar spinning mill of the Otto textile company in Wendlingen-Unterboihingen is one of the most important industrial monuments in south-west Germany and is to be developed into a future-oriented living and working area in the context of IBA’27. […]

Spatially highly concentrated, the development of industrial culture from the 19th to the second half of the 20th century can be seen today on the industrial area, on which production was still taking place until 2020. Work processes typical of the time, technical pioneering achievements, but also the social conditions of the textile industry at that time can be understood there.

The exhibition project along and across the river follows these traces and invites artists to engage artistically and reflectively with the Otto company context. Based on historical archive material and site-specific investigations, questions of the former yarn production of the Otto company in the transcontinental network of the textile and cotton industry are examined in connection with overarching, current and future aspects.

How has industrialization and series production determined our humanity to this day? What understanding of work has developed in industrial society? How do we face the global changes that we humans have brought about since the beginning of industrialization, in the age of the Anthropocene, today and in the future?
