Zwischenbericht

The Panke at the Uferhallen inspired in 2010 at the very first exhibition of ZNE! “zwischenbericht” to develop a filter that enabled exhibition visitors:inside to draw water from the urban rivulet Panke and turn it into significantly purified water in just a few steps.

Due to the sustainable conception of the exhibition, the installations of »zwischenbericht« have changed over the last 12 years and brought more and more knowledge about the properties of water to light. They use an ancient cultural technique of filtering in four steps: for the dust, the water first runs through felt, then through pebbles, through sand and finally through carbon filters. This installation is now to be resumed on the occasion of the last station, the findings are EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW and enable the workshop visitors (children and young people) to capture the landscape of the Berlin rock layers as a filter for our drinking water. The workshop participants are also invited to experience the extraordinary self-cleaning powers of water: the Panke sound in the water bucket makes the analogy between these properties of water and our memory comprehensible.

The aim of this workshop is an intensive examination of the topic of water shortage, with the resulting drought and the consequences in Berlin/Brandenburg within the last 3-5 years. Possible solutions for a transformation for dealing with water scarcity, the transition to everyday life with reduced water consumption are to be worked out and deepened in this workshop, children and young people are to be given knowledge about the properties of water in a practical way, they should have their own Develop a feeling for them and think in a context of current political and scientific discussions such as climate change, drought, fresh and salt water.

For several weeks, a school class deals with the topic of water throughout the curriculum. Global issues of water distribution, local aspects of drought and flooding in Berlin and Brandenburg or rain irrigation in the schoolyard are discussed and practically explored.

HQ is the scientific term for the discharge rate at high water.

H means high water. Q means discharge quantity.

The artists Franziska Pierwoss and Jana Engel work together with school classes, within the framework of project days, to develop interdisciplinary basic knowledge about water: ethical considerations about human responsibility, waste of drinking water, geographical distribution of water, application of water in areas of technical production or agriculture, up to the development of concepts for a rainwater irrigation system for their own schoolyard.

In the context of the exhibition, elements of the school project HQ8, first realized in the context of Schools of Sustainability of the House of World Cultures, will be taken up and adapted to the context in Wedding. The focus will be on the Panke Valley as a potential floodplain, aspects of drought and flooding in Berlin and Brandenburg, and rainwater irrigation in the schoolyard.

HQ8 was realized for the first time within the framework of Schools of Sustainabiltiy of the House of World Cultures in the school year 2022/23 with class 8a of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Gymnasium.

What does sustainability mean? And what does it mean for today’s children to grow up in a world where raw materials are becoming increasingly scarce and the climate is changing at breakneck speed?

In dialogical and creative exercises we will deal with the topic of sustainability. Starting from our own needs and strengths, we will consider what community life could look like in the future. What do we actually need to live in our environment, neighborhood, city?

Workshop – on building with hemp bricks

The workshop shows a new way to produce and use building materials (hemp lime).

This requires a chain:
1. agriculture and harvesting technology
2. hemp processing / separation of raw materials into shives and fibres
3. hemp stone manufacture / production of hemp-lime insulating stones
4. processing of the stones

Point 1 to 3 are produced and worked out in the hemp lime manufactory Zempow, this is a German exception, normally the hemp straw is brought from the field to the processing plant, this can be several hundred to 1000km, we drive here only a few 100m to 2 km.

This workshop offers the technology and guidance to get this new building material.

Hemp hurd bound with lime shows the new way!
(hemp lime is a mixture of the binder lime 1 part & 3-4 parts supplement of hemp hurd, the broken pistil of the plant)

Tiny house can be dismantled for reuse, size about 2,2 x 4m with an indoor wooden framework. Facade out of hemplime bricks as drywall, shed roof with hemp wool insulation.

Hemp lime has the following properties

regional & mobile manufacturing
can be implemented directly with little effort
carbon negativ (pro cbm minus 110-130 kg CO2)
Hemp from natural fields (free of glyphosate)
built-in moisture protection via the buffering effect of the binding agent
suitable for grandchildren
sand free
cementless
vegan
transparent supply chain of raw materials

We use hemp hurd because:

hemp is grown in Brandenburg & Mecklenburg
in our case, the hemp comes from regional organic farming in Zempow
these occur en masse in the hemp plant
hemp has an open-pored cell structure
hemp has a positive effect on agriculture field economy

We take lime because:

a lot of moisture is buffered (rapid absorption and release of moisture)
because of the disinfecting effect
easy to repair (our bones are made of lime and therefore grow back together)
lime is thinking ahead evolutionary

In the workshop, insulation materials against noise, cold and dirt are made. The raw materials sheep’s wool and clay are processed into protective walls against noise and exhaust fumes for Tempelhofer Feld.

Talking Wool: Wool in Exchange

Our 4-hour workshop »Talking Wool« will consist of presentations by Berlin and Brandenburg-based actors in the wool supply chain. The talks aim to cover the issues of shepherds, how fleece is shorn and (frequently not) collected and processed in Germany’s remaining textile industry, small businesses using local wool to produce ethical textiles, gate-keeping mechanisms that hold these initiatives back, as well as the political changes that need to be made to secure a fair income for farmers and level the playing field for entrepreneurs to help use this valuable raw material. To close the loop and explain how wool fits into the circular economy, we hope to cover wool recycling, staggered downcycling and biodegradability. The event will be in English. In unserem Leben ist sie allgegenwärtig – als Werbeträgerin, als Gegenstand der Forschung und der Dichtung, als Brotbelag, als Glücksbringer und Spielzeug. Sie wird als heilig verehrt oder für blöd befunden, nur gleichgültig ist sie uns nie: Nach bald
10 000 Jahren Zusammenleben ist sie uns noch immer ein Rätsel.

Anekdotenreich und voller überraschender Funde präsentiert Florian Werner die Kultur- und Kuriositätengeschichte des geheimnisvollen Rindviechs. Zeus verwandelte eine seiner liebsten Liebhaberinnen in eine Kuh, und im Barock galt Milch als Beweis für die Existenz Gottes. Aber wann und wo fand der erste Kuhhandel statt? Was haben Thomas Mann, Bertolt Brecht, Francis Ford Coppola und Aerosmith mit dem Tier zu schaffen? Und was passt eigentlich alles auf eine Kuhhaut?

Workshop – Lampenschirme aus Plastiktüten mit Dodi Reifenberg

Workshops mit Künstler Dodi Reifenberg

Im Rahmen der Sonderausstellung zur nachahmung empfohlen! expeditionen in ästhetik und nachhaltigkeit veranstaltete das rauch Museum, Freudenberg, am 18. und 19. Februar 2016 zwei Workshops mit dem Künstler Dodi Reifenberg, bei denen gebrauchte Plastiktüten durch Upcycling zu Lampen verarbeitet wurden.

Am ersten Workshop-Tag nahmen insgesamt 14 Frauen aus Freudenberg und der Umgebung teil. Unter ihnen waren auch Mitarbeiterinnen sowie ehemalige Mitarbeiterinnen der Rauch Möbelwerke. Sie entwarfen mit großem Eifer und Spaß Lampenschirme aus Plastiktüten. Unter der Anleitung des Künstlers Dodi Reifenberg umwickelten die Damen Lampengestelle mit verschiedenfarbigen Plastiktüten, die so nach und nach eine neue Funktion bekamen.

Am zweiten Tag waren neun Schüler aus verschiedenen Gymnasien der Region mit ihrer Kunsterzieherin Frau Mündel-Hechtfischer vom Gymnasium Elsenfeld zu Gast im rauch Museum. Frau Mündel-Hechtfischer führte ein schulisches Projekt zusammen, das das Thema Re- und Upcycling hatte. Nach einer Führung durch die aktuelle Sonderausstellung mit Museumsleiter Wolfgang Sasse stürzten sich die Schüler sofort in die Arbeit an den Lampenschirmen. Hier zeigte sich die enorme Kreativität der Teilnehmer, die sich intensiv mit dem Material auseinandersetzten.

Der Künstler Dodi Reifenberg lebt in Berlin und arbeitet dort seit Jahren mit Plastiktüten, einem Produkt das in 1,5 Sekunden hergestellt und durchschnittlich 25 Minuten benutzt wird und um die 1000 Jahre dauern wird, bis es sich zersetzt.

Mit seiner Installation “Green – Bag – Movement, 2010” war Dodi Reifenberg Teil der eingangs genannten Sonderausstellung. In seiner Serie UNTITLED verarbeitet Dodi Reifenberg den unverantwortlichen Umgang der Industrie mit dem Produkt Plastiktüten und die daraus entstehenden negativen Auswirkungen auf unsere Umwelt. Die meisten Plastiktüten bekommt er geschenkt, sie sind vorher bereits benutzt worden. Auch die Aufnahmen, die er nachstellt, sind gefundenes Material aus dem Internet. Beides eine Form des Re- und Upcyclings.

Peter Reichenbach, artist from Essen and initiator of the dye-garden initiative “sevengardens” invites within the exhibition ETF! on August 2nd, 2014 from 10am – 4pm to a workshop for mulitplicators, educators and teachers.

The workshop targest 25 interested people, who want to use while painting and printing textiles and cosmetics herbal colours.

The aim of the workshop is to give multiplicators the possibility to make use of the world wide network of “sevengardens”. On the UNESCO World Heritage Zeche Zollverein a dye-garden has been already installed, which can be visited within the exhibition and which is also used for participation.

The side programme was developed in collaboration with RWE Stiftung and Stiftung Zollverein and made possible with the support of RWE Stiftung, Stiftung Mercator, Stiftung Kulturhauptstadt RUHR.2010, Stiftung Umwelt und Entwicklung Nordrhein-Westfalen, NRW KULTURsekretariat, Anneliese Brost-Stiftung, GLS Treuhand, the city of Essen within its programme Kulturrucksackprogramms and 100 prozent erneuerbar stiftung.
